Abstract 提婆達多是釋迦牟尼的堂兄弟，在佛經中他被描繪為十惡不赦的壞人。實際上他是一個非常有才能、威望很高的人。他有自己的戒律，有自己的教義，有群眾。他同釋迦牟尼的矛盾絕不是個人恩怨，而是"兩條路線"的鬥爭，在佛教史上是重大事件。他的信徒，晉代法顯在印度看到過,唐代玄奘和義凈也看到過。足證他的影響之深遠，歷千數百年而不息。這是佛教史上的一個重要問題。可惜過去還沒有人認真探討過，本文是第一次嘗試。以後再寫印度佛教史，必不應再忽略這個事實。
