AbstractThis book focuses on Buddhism in China during the late Qing and Republican period (c. 1980-1940). It demonstrates that Buddhism in China during this time remained a powerful cultural and religious force. The author draws on scarcely analyzed historical and archive sources, including photographs and musical scores and aptly argues that Chinese Buddhism played a more vital role in shaping Chinese culture than previously assumed. This book opens up a new perspective on Chinese history and fills a significant gap in the field of Chinese Buddhist history.
