AbstractIN THE TRADITION OF SHIN BUDDHIST doctrinal studies at Ryukoku University, Shinran’s idea of practice and shinjin has been viewed, for the most part, from the perspectives of two schools of thought: the first considers true practice to be the Name that we recite (shogyō-ha), whereas for the second, true practice is our act of reciting the Name (nōgyō-ha). It could be said that, of these two currents of thought, the former represents the mainstream approach within the Ryukoku tradition. Which of the two do I belong to? If one must belong to either of these two schools of thought, then I would belong to the shogyō-ha. I question a number of points taken by the traditional interpretations of the past. Recently, however, I have come to believe that the cause lies in the existence of studies of Shin Buddhist doctrine that are based in Rennyo’s thought.
