AbstractThe seven fourteenth-century engi 縁起 (“true histories”) associated with Shidoji 志度寺, at the northeast corner of Shikoku, relate the temple’s legendary origins and the story of successive, divinely inspired repairs. Five are translated below, with an introduction.
The best known, Sanshū Shido Dōjō engi 讃州志度道場縁起, also raises issues
related to the origins of the Fujiwara regents and to medieval Japanese sovereignty.
