The erection of the image of the "Western Confucians" of the Jesuits who came to China during the Ming and the Qing Dynasties began with Matteo Ricci's taking off kasaya and Putting Confucian clothes on.This paper defined the time and the place when and where Matteo Ricci took thes action in the variety of opinons on this matter, and argued that the key point for the realization of this stratregical means did not depend on whether the General Father of the Society of Jesus and Pope approved this action or not as the scholars at home and abroad concerned about in the past, but depended on whether the society of late Ming Dynasty, especially the ruling class approved this action or not. Matteo Ricci's own academic cultivation, his study for the dresses of the various classes were the key points for the missionaries' wearing Confucian clothes and hats. Born in 1951, the author is a Doctor of History, a professor of Department of History of Hangzhou University.
