本文係參考相關的禪宗典籍,近代禪學史家之論著,尤其是敦煌發現的禪法古文獻,試圖以考証方法,有系統的一
一分析比較唐代諸派禪師們 (包括荷澤:神會,慧堅,宗密,保唐寺無住,江西:大義,大珠,如會,牛頭:惠忠,玄挺,雲居智禪師,青原:三平和尚義忠,天皇道悟) 對此一問題之見解,期能對「見性」思想有較深入之了解.

諸禪師對「見性」思想的理解略述如下:神會:見性指頓悟見佛性; 慧堅:見性是體寂則不生,性空則無見; 無住:見性成佛道,無念即見性; 大義:佛性不離所問; 大珠:一切處無心者,即是菩提解脫,涅槃寂靜,禪定及至六度,皆見性處; 如會:見性非眼,眼病何害; 智禪師:能所俱絕名為見性.
