Abstract本文嘗試將禪宗之教育理念和方法與西方哲學家杜威的教育哲學作一比較,並討論其異同; 討論重點如下:
一. 就形上學比較:佛教反對引起對立,分別,相對性的思考方式; 此和杜威兼容並蓄採平衡不偏,有相通處.
二. 就人性論比較:杜威的「人性論」是終生不斷學習,改造和提昇的歷程; 佛教的「人性論」有唯識系,說明清淨無漏種子之薰習,有真常系,說明善性內在作用. 兩者在先天的人性看法有異,但對後天人性可能發展,卻持相同看法.
三. 從教育理念和方法比較:佛教教育的本質:智慧的教育,啟發的教育,倫理實踐的教育.杜威教育思想重要特點:民主教育,教育即生長論,教育無目的論.
四. 兩者間異同:
(1) 均極重視教育功能.
(2) 均極力反對二元對立.
(3) 均強調「直覺」的經驗.
(4) 均認為「危機」是教育的助力; 差異在杜威認為教師的責任為引導學生面對,解決問題; 禪宗不僅如此,還有意逼使學生去尋找生路.
(5) 均以具特色的教育思想和方法著稱; 其差異在禪宗以「見性成佛」為教育首要課題; 杜威倡導實用主義之教育學說.
(6) 均全面肯定人習性之可塑性; 其差異在禪宗主張人有明確的善性,杜威主張人之習性可改變.
