Abstract帝王治術與佛法的結合,北朝至隋代為代表時期。本文主論述此時期歷任君主的宗教政策及兩者間的互動關係,尤側重於探討當時流行之「彌勒下生」信仰對此關係之影響,並比較其與同時期道教的「真君出世」思想之異同。其次,亦論及「彌勒下生」信仰為歷代亂世中反抗政權的平民所提供的理論基礎。
彌勒下生的故事裡,必有轉輪王與人間淨土的出現。轉輪王以德服人,以正法治法,成帝王的楷模;而人間淨土無異仙境,成黎民希冀的現世樂園。北朝至隋代帝王從較單純的「當今如來」的觀念,演變到以轉輪王自居,使佛法為王政所用,使治術得到有力的依據。帝王藉「下生」與「護法」的觀念,雖可鞏固王權,但帝王畢竟不能成就人間淨土,而人間淨土卻一直是亂世中吸引民眾揭竿起事之美麗遠景,從北朝至隋代,自稱明法王,月光童子及彌勒佛等沙門之亂,及號稱真君李弘出世的道教起義皆是與下生信仰有關的叛變。
