AbstractThe first two chapters deal with Pure Land Buddhism in China. Relies primarily on Japanese secondary sources such as "Genshi Bukkyo ni okeru shoten shiso (原始佛教生天思想)" by Fujita Kotatsu (藤田宏達),whose Genshi Jodo shisho no kenkyu [A Study of the Early Pure Land Buddhism] is considered landmark in the field.

Genshin was one of the early advocates of the worship of Amida and the Nembutsu within Japanese Tendai. His work, which is here summarized, translated, and discussed, describes the torments of hell, the beauties of the Pure Land, and the advantages of the Nembutsu. It was influential in the formative period of the Japanese Pure Land sects.
