Abstract我們知道,佛教宣揚的阿羅漢果強調自我解脫,而菩薩果則一方面考慮自我解脫,另一方面要求幫助眾生也獲得解脫。從道德基本原則,即個人利益與社會整體利益的關系而論,羅漢顯然是以利己為根本目的,那么菩薩呢,其根本目的究竟是利己還是利他,或是兩者兼之?這是一個涉及到佛教本質的問題。按照佛教徒自己的說法,菩薩果是自利利他,即兩者兼顧。如《無量壽經》認為:“自利利人,人我兼顧。”《佛學大辭典》有所謂“二利”的概念,里面明確指出:“上求菩提為自利,下化眾生為利他。小乘之行,唯為自利,菩薩之行,乃兼利他。”這里一個“兼”字看來似乎使大、小乘涇渭分明,似乎大乘在個人利益與社會利益的關系問題上,不是像小乘以利己為根本目的,而是“自利利人”,而是“自利兼利他”。
