Abstract清末民初,是中國佛教的艱難時刻。由於國家衰敗、民族危亡,人們都在思索衰敗與危亡的原因,一切古老的事物幾乎都成為懷疑物件,佛教亦不能倖免。因此有廢廟學、散僧人之舉。但正如弘一大師所說,如果把廟拆淨、把僧殺光,便可以換來個富強的國家、興旺的民族,請從我弘一始!事實證明佛教並非社會不進步的原因,倒是社會不進步影響了佛教的發展。清末民初有一批思想家看到了這個事實,他們在佛教最艱難的時刻創造了佛教有史以來最先進的理論,即以佛教適應現代而推動現代,適應未來而創造未來的理論。譚嗣同的《仁學》是其中的代表作之一,發聵振聾,餘響至今不絕於耳。楊仁山居士是譚嗣同的師輩,也是近代佛教史上不可不講的一位仁人。北大老教授白化文先生足涉淨土,心懷虔敬,深柳瞻禮,承澤著文。主持先睹為快,稱幸甚;讀者有感可發,望賜稿。
