| Abstract | In recent years Buddhist nuns from Asia and the West have met together to become more active in improving their status in the female sangha. At "Life As a Western Buddhist Nun," the 1996 conference in Dharamsala, H.H. the Dalai Lama supported this effort of Buddhist nuns to clarify their purpose in taking vows, widening their context, broadening community beyond their own abbeys, and supporting one another on their quest to achieve greater equality with men in liturgical matters, especially ordination. They received concentrated teachings on the bhikshuni precepts, discussed their lives and Dharma practice, and compared traditions and precepts in different lineages.. "The book gathers some of the presentations and teachings of this conference. Coming from many different countries and backgrounds, these women show ways they have found to embrace group practice in an era when most societies extoll individualism. In the first book to reflect the voices of Buddhist nuns from every major tradition, 14 contributors describe their experiences, explain their order's history, and discuss their lives.
本書緣起於1996年在印度達蘭莎拉所舉行的一個關於如何發展比丘尼僧團的國際研討會，會中來自南傳與北傳、東方與西方的出家眾與學者齊聚一堂，共同分享他們的僧團共修經驗、比較個別傳統之異同、研習戒律之精義；並探索比丘尼僧團未來發展的方向，及追求女眾與男眾之間更平等的地位；大會並邀請達賴喇嘛致詞。由於本會為難得的國際盛會，來自中國、韓國、泰國、西藏、美國等地區的出家眾，破除宗派、門戶、族群、文化之畛域，發表個人實修體驗，及討論拓展比丘尼僧團的方法與其所面臨的困難，足以提供目前還在起步階段的西方比丘尼僧團寶貴的參考經驗，故會後決定挑選部份論文結集出書。本書的特色在於不作深奧的義理探討，而以來自不同傳統的比丘尼現身說法，討論其在僧團內部的生活持戒、修行精進的實際經驗為主，以便能釐清一般讀者對佛教僧團與戒律的疑惑與誤解，進而思索佛教修行對現代人生活的意義；對全球各地正在努力發展出家與在家眾之各類組織的佛教界人士而言，亦提供了甚佳之參考借鏡的材料。從本書的內容，可約略窺知目前西方世界對佛學的興趣與知見，已經從早期經典文獻的註釋考據，以至1960年代以降，偏好以禪坐靜修、以追求靈性經驗的時尚，而迄今日開始重視僧團集體共修經驗與戒律對實踐佛法的意義了。西方人也借用佛教集體共修與無私奉獻的生活體驗，來反省西方社會太過重視個人主義與自我中心的文化所衍生的弊端。 |
