AbstractEnglish and American civil society has spiritual origins, and those origins survive today as roots still necessary for its nourishment. We cannot understand the historical development of civil society without seeing how its current crisis is related to the atrophy of those roots. This seems to imply that, in order for civil society to become revitalized, its spiritual dimension needs to be recuperated.
