Abstract北宋臨濟宗的振興始於首山省念及其弟子,然而在省念的弟子中尤其以汾陽善昭的影響最大. 善昭在傳法過程中很重視語言文字的運用,不僅經常根據場合引述以往禪師的語錄,且有時以所謂代語,別語,詰語等禪語表達形式加以評論和發揮,還從流傳於叢林間的禪語公案中選擇出一百則以偈頌的形式加以評述,編撰成《頌古百則》,生前已有語錄文集傳抄於叢林間,對宋代文字禪的發展影響極大. 他培養出十幾位才智出眾並且具很高活動能力的弟子,相繼傳法於大江南北. 可以說,自從進入北宋後期以後,傳佈於各地的臨濟宗幾乎皆屬於善昭的法系.

北宋臨濟宗分為黃龍派和楊岐派,是中國禪宗史也是中國佛教史上的重要事件. 這兩個派別就是從善昭的弟子楚圓的門下產生的. 此後,中國佛教史書往往將禪宗派別統稱為「五家七宗」,即:臨濟宗,溈仰宗,曹洞宗,雲門宗,法眼宗和臨濟宗的黃龍派和楊岐派. 然而實際情況是,以後的臨濟宗已不再單獨存在,不是屬於黃龍派就是屬於楊岐派了.

The Linji school is one of the most important branches of Chan. After the death of its founder,Linji Yixuan,the Linji school entered a prolonged period of stagnation. In the Northern Song,the appearance of Shoushan Shengnian marked a new era of activity,and with his disciple,Fenshang Shanzhao,the school flourished once again. Proselytizing in Fenyang,Shanzhao placed particular emphasis on the use of language. In addition to employing more traditional "recorded sayings" (yulu),he also used responses to questions previously unanswered (daiyu),new responses to previous questions (bieyu) and "interrogations" (jieyu) to evaluate and expound upon Chan ideas. He further compiled the Songs on One Hundred Sayings (Songgu baize) in which he provides gathas evaluating one hundred Chan gongan. His influence on Song "literary Chan" was enormous. He trained over ten extremely talented and energetic disciples who propagated his teachings throughout the region. Subsequently,almost all Linji lineages traced their ancestry back to Shanzhao.
