| Abstract | 弘一大師畢生對漢傳佛教，留下可貴的言教與身教。尤其是他在戒律方面的學理鑽研與實踐堅持，至今仍深深地影響著漢傳佛教的僧眾。縱使今日以律學原理之溯源法與史學研究之相關方法，來看待此一傳統研究法，會覺得有所不足，但在他的時代，他已做到了最大的極限。此中，《四分律比丘戒相表記》係其最重視之一部作品，對於行持者而言，最能收提綱挈領，以簡馭繁之效，至今不但廣為刊行，而且有勝雨比丘尼續作《四分律比丘尼戒相表記》，堪稱《四分戒經》教科書之雙璧。本論文依以下四個綱領而展開研究：一、弘一大師研律簡史：自出家（一九一八）以訖圓寂（一九四二）的二十四年間，弘一大師在律學的研修與弘傳上用了大部份的時間，更以全部的生命來奉行律法。二、《四分律比丘戒相表記》之著作緣起：從一九二一年三月起，屢經修改，手抄數次，至一九二四年十月，始告定篇。期間他從依《根有》新律轉而重視南山舊律。至本書成後的一九三一年，他更發願棄捨有部，專學南山。三、本書特色：本書有「易於普及」及「檢索方便」的兩大優點。四、本書在漢傳佛教的影響：本書有「與時代佛教對話」的重大意義。從其律疏摘記之選輯中，可見到大師的用意，應是借古德之勸諭，而作時流之針砭。
Throughout his life time, Venerable Hong Yi had left behind valuable teachings for Chinese Buddhism, be it verbal teachings or the way he lived his life. This is especially so in his diligent research and firm determination in upholding precepts. His aspiration has deeply influenced the Chinese Sangha members up to today. By the standards of today’s historical and source re-tracing research methodologies, we may find his traditional way of research inadequate. Nonetheless, he has done his best considering the time he was in.
Among his works, A Graphical Explanation of the Bhikhhu’s Precepts in the Dharmagupta Vinaya is regarded as the most important. This book is particularly useful to a practitioner as it highlights the essence of the precepts and presents the contents in a clear and precise way. This piece of work has been published widely even up to today. In addition, continuing from Venerable Hong Yi’s work, bhikkhuni Venerable Sheng Yu also compiled A Graphical Explanation of the Bhikkhuni’s Precepts in the Dharmagupta Vinaya. These two books can be regarded as important teaching materials for the study of the Dharmagupta precepts. This article discusses Venerable Hong Yi’s book according to the four themes below: 1.Brief history on Venerable Hong Yi’s research on Vinaya: For the twenty-four years since his renunciation (1918) to his passing away (1942), Venerable Hong Yi spent most of his time in researching and promoting the study of Vinaya, and devoted his life in upholding the precepts wholeheartedly. 2.The origination of A Graphical Explanation of the Bhikkhu’s Precepts in Dharmagupta Vinaya: Venerable Hong Yi started writing this book in March 1921. After numerous times of editing and hand-copying, the book was finalised in October 1924. During this period, he diverted his research from the new vinaya of Mula-sarvativadin to the old version of Nan Shan vinaya. After the book was completed in 1931, he made a vow to cease his study of the Sarvativadin vinaya to concentrate on his study of the Nan Shan vinaya. 3.The Uniqueness of this book: this book has two unique characteristics. Firstly, it is easy for the general readers. Secondly, it is convenient for searching information. 4.The impact of this book on Chinese Buddhism: this book played a significant role in establishing a dialogue with Buddhists of the era. From the excerpts of his commentaries on vinaya, we can see the Venerable’s intention of using the advice of past great masters to remind his contemporaries on the importance of the teachings. |
