By studying the Buddhist contents of the murals, the social and historical background, and the contemporary relationship between politics and religions, this paper points out that Mr.Li Zehou’s one-sided opinion that early Dunhuang Buddhist art is the embodiment of the "miserable world," and that religions and religious art are the groaning of the miserable people is not tenable. It also suggests that there were many reasons for people to convert to religions, and that religious art was also rich in content.
