Venerable Master Hsing Yun once said, “Buddhism has spread for thousands of years in the world and in particular it spread Eastward to China for more than two thousand years. In that time, Buddhism underwent several religious
persecutions. Each time Buddhism was able to turn the crisis around. Although the propagation of Buddhism nowadays is prosperous, there is still a hidden crisis.” Venerable Master Hsing Yun pointed out that the crisis of Buddhism exists within Buddhism, and it reflects his concerns as well as his hopes for the future development of Buddhism. In February 2017, the author, together with a few researchers and young teachers, traveled to Australia and New Zealand to visit the branch temples of Fo Guang Shan. The purpose was to conduct a preliminary inspection on Humanistic Buddhism. From a historical perspective and the practice of Humanistic Buddhism in Australia, this paper intends to analyze the development of Humanistic Buddhism in Australia, its turning points, and actualization of those opportunities.
