Abstract印順在《初期大乘佛教之起源與開展》一書中,闡發「文殊法門」,並列舉四十七本與文殊相關之經典,而早在《中國禪宗史》之研究中,已探究《文殊般若經》與禪宗之關係。印順援引三種資料,以證明禪宗四祖道信引用《文殊般若經》「一行三昧」之史實,一是唐‧淨覺《楞伽師資記》之〈道信傳〉,二是唐‧淨覺《楞伽師資記》之〈神秀傳〉,三是唐‧荊溪湛然《止觀輔行傳宏決》,並點出道信《楞伽經》與《般若經》合一、「念佛與成佛合一」的禪法。他並提出《文殊般若經》「一行三昧」是理解五祖與其他門人之間的鑰匙,特別是神秀與慧能。神秀「念佛名」、「淨心」的禪門,取用《文殊所說般若經》「一行三昧」之「念佛」修持形式;而慧能《壇經》「說摩訶般若波羅蜜法」來自《文殊般若經》「念自性般若」,彰顯「自性本自清淨」,見性成佛之理。這兩者之間的發展是有些不同,然禪宗北漸南頓法門與《文殊般若經》關係,清楚可見。
