Abstract法顯幼年受沙彌戒,但受戒後並不住廟,家人讓法顯受沙彌戒的目的衹是為了防止其夭折,而非意令其出家,東晉這一宗教習俗值得我們關注。(2)法顯成年受具足戒後,感嘆戒律殘缺,是否得戒恐系法顯西行求法、廣搜戒律的重要原因之一;如此,法顯應該是受具足戒後不久壯年開始籌措西行,而不可能是等到六十餘歲的晚年同一批年紀相仿的同學一同西行。現今判定法顯是晚年西行的依據,主要是根據其卒年和世壽逆推;但法顯的世壽及何時卒於荊州辛寺似有討論的餘地。(3)法顯在沒有將其攜回的經典全部翻譯完成的情況下,就急於離開首都建康前往荊州辛寺,應與當時辛寺有一批北方持鳩摩羅什新譯《十誦律》的僧人南下住錫該寺有直接關系,而法顯前往荊州辛寺又將其在建康新譯《摩訶僧祇律》帶去荊州。荊州是南北彙通之地,法顯晚年定居辛寺,對於南北戒律交流,北朝中前期流行《摩訶僧祇律》,南朝流行《十誦律》,都有重要的奠基性意義。
