| Abstract | 불교의 여러 학파들은 불타의 가르침을 진리로 받아들이면서도 깨달음을 서로 다르게 해석함으로써 서로 논쟁하였다. 따라서 여러 불교 학파들의 깨달음 해석을 올바르게 이해하려면, 그들의 깨달음 해석을 그들 각자의 사상적인 맥락 속에서 고찰할 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 그런 필요에 따라 용수 및 월칭의 저술과 반야 계통의 경론을 중심으로 해서, 중관학파에서 설하는 무상정등각의 성취에 대하여 고찰하였다.
대승불교에 속하는 중관학파에게 수행의 최고 목적은 무상정등각의 성취이다. 본래 초기불교에서 무상정등각이란 ‘사성제에 대한 최고의 올바르고 완전한 깨달음’을 의미하는 말이었지만, 『대지도론』에서 그것은 일체법의 총상과 별상을 모두 아는 지혜라는 의미로 사용되었다. 그리고 여기서 대승의 보살이 자신의 열반을 보류하고, 무상정등각의 성취를 바랐던 이유를 알 수 있게 된다. 왜냐하면 보살의 서원은 모든 중생을 걸림없이 제도하는 것이고, 그것은 무상정등각(=일체종지)을 성취함으로써 가능해지기 때문이다.
용수와 『반야경』에 의하면 무상정등각의 성취를 위해서는 세 가지 조건이 갖추어져야 한다. 그것은 자비심(慈悲心), 보리심(菩提心), 반야지(般若智)이다. 그 셋은 다음과 같이 관련되어 있다. 자비심은 보리심의 바탕이다. 왜냐하면 보살은 자비심 때문에 보리심을 일으키기 때문이다. 반야지는 자비심과 보리심이 성취되도록 돕는다. 왜냐하면 반야지는 보살의 자비와 육바라밀을 무희론과 무집착의 청정한 것으로 만들어 보살이 무상정
등각을 성취하도록 돕기 때문이다. 월칭의 『입중론』에 의하면 보살은 자비심, 보리심, 반야지를 바탕으로 제1환희지로 부터 제10법운지에 이르는 여러 단계에서 십바라밀을 완성하고 무상정등각을 성취함으로써 마침내 불지(佛地)에 도달하게 된다. 불지에 도달하여 불타가 된 보살은 무상정등각(=일체종지), 삼신(三身), 십력(十力)과 함께 사선(四禪), 사무량(四無量), 팔등지(八等至) 내지 십바라밀(十波羅蜜) 등의 여러 공덕을 갖추고 걸림없이 중생을 제도하게 된다.
The Buddhist schools debated each other, interpreting the notion of enlightenment differently, while accepting Buddha’s teaching as truth. So, to understand correctly the enlightenment interpretations of Buddhist schools, it is necessary to examine their enlightenment interpretations according to their ideological contexts. According to such necessity, this paper examined the perfect enlightenment (無上正等覺) of Madhyamika, centering on the Madhyamika and Prajñāpāramitā literatures.
For Madhyamika, the highest goal of practice is the achievement of perfect enlightenment. In early Buddhism, the perfect enlightenment refers to the perfect enlightenment on the four noble truths, however, in Mahā-prajñāpāramitā-śāstra (『大智度論』), it is used as the knowledge of the common and individual characteristic of all things, At this point, we can know why Mahāyāna Bodhisattvas wish the perfect enlightenment.
According to Nagārjūna (龍樹, 150-250), three conditions must be met for the achievement of perfect enlightenment: the mercy for all creatures (慈悲心), the wish of perfect enlightenment (菩提心), and the knowledge of emptiness (般若智). The mercy for all creatures is a basis of the wish of perfect enlightenment. The knowledge of emptiness helps to complete the mercy for all creatures, which is followed by the wish of perfect enlightenment to be completed.
According to Candrakīrti (月稱, 600-650), Bodhisattvas arrive at the Buddha stage (佛地) with achievement of the perfect enlightenment, which can be completed through the completion of 10 paramitas (波羅蜜多). The 10 paramitas can be achieved through 10 stages of practice from the 1st joy-stage (歡喜地) to the 10th truth-cloud-stage (法雲地), based on the mercy for all creature, the wish of perfect enlightenment, and the knowledge of emptiness. A Bodhisattva who attains the Buddhahood keeps the perfect enlightenment and many other strengths to save all creatures freely. |
