| Abstract | 약 1-2세기 무렵 불타전(佛陀傳)이 점차 체계화되면서 초기불전에서 볼 수 없었던 지모신(地母神)이 등장하여 붓다와 마라(Māra)의 대결 이야기는 더욱 생동감 있게 묘사된다. 그렇다면 붓다의 정각과 관련하여 초기 경전에서 볼 수 없었던 지모신이 왜 이후 제작된 경전들에서 나타나게 되었는지 의문이 들게 된다.
인도 전통 신화에 따르면 대지의 여신인 ‘쁘리티위(Pṛthivī)’는 모든 중생을 포용하는 모성애적 특성을 지니며 수호신의 역할을 할 뿐만 아니라 나중에 정통 힌두교의 ‘두르가(Durga)’와 ‘깔리(Kali)’와 같은 여신들의 근간이 된다. 인도 신화를 보면 여신만이 강력한 악마를 물리칠 수 있는 존재로 묘사되는데 모두 ‘어머니’로서의 여신이 강력한 힘을 가지기 때문이다. 또한 동남아시아 국가에서 불교도들은 지금도 지모신과 관련된 의식과 신앙을 실천하고 있다.
불전에서 처음부터 지모신이 출현한 것은 아니다. 이 지모신의 등장 배경에 첫 시작을 알리는 문헌은 『마하와스뚜』(Mahāvastu)로서 아직 지모신의 모습이 보이지 않지만 그 출현을 암시한다고 볼 수 있다. 이후 더욱 정교해진 『방광대장엄경』이나 『불본행집경』에선 본격적으로 지모신이 직접 몸을 드러내어 엄청난 지진과 굉음을 일으킨다. 이에 마라가 공포에 사로잡혀 기절하지만, 지모신은 자비심에서 차가운 물을 뿌려 기절한 마라를 깨우고 도망가도록 도와주기도 한다. 즉 붓다에게 위해를 가하는 마라의 목숨까지 살려주는 행위는 불교의 자비사상을 상징적으로 표현한 것이고, 이 또한 지모신의 역할 중 하나라고 볼 수 있다.
이들 불교 문헌들은 붓다의 정각이 가능하게 된 이유로서 그가 과거 생에 실천했던 무수한 보시행을 제시하였다. 후대 불타전 편찬자들은 붓다가 현생에서 오직 수행만으로 정각을 성취하기란 불가능하고 과거 생에서 무량한 공덕을 쌓은 덕분에 정각을 이룰 수 있었다고 보았다. 그리하여 그러한 공덕을 더욱 공정하고 강력하게 증명할 수 있는 존재로서 붓다 본인이 아닌 제삼자인 지모신을 내세웠고, 이것이 지모신이 경전에서 등장하게 된 가장 큰 이유라고 할 수 있다.
Earth goddesses began to appear in Buddhist texts between the 1st and 2nd century C.E. when the biographies of Buddha were developed. It was at this time that the story of the battle between Buddha and Māra, which was not seen in the early Buddhist texts, had come to be more vividly described. The question arises as to why the earth goddess in relation to the story of Buddha defeating Māra appeared in the later Buddhist scriptures.
According to traditional Indian mythology, the goddess of the earth, Pṛthivī, not only has the characteristic of maternal love that embraces all life but also serves as a guardian deity, and later becomes the basis of powerful goddesses such as Durga and Kali. In Indian mythology only goddesses are described as being able to defeat powerful demons because goddesses, as mothers, have the greatest force. In Southeast Asian countries, Buddhists still conduct rituals and believe in the earth goddess. For instance, she is summoned as a witness when Buddhists donate. Furthermore she plays a role in the prevention of disasters and expelling evil spirits.
Perhaps the first Buddhist text which implies the appearance of the earth goddess is the Mahāvastu. Also, in texts such as the Fang Guang Da Zhuangyan Jing (方廣大莊嚴經) and Fo Ben Xing Ji Jing (佛本行集經), the earth goddess helps Māra, who has fainted, wake up and run away by sprinkling cold water out of compassion.
These Buddhist texts show that the reason why Buddha could attain perfect enlightenment is because he made huge donations in past lives. The earth goddess played a big role in the enlightenment of the Buddha by bearing witness to the Bodhisattva's numerous good deeds and defeating Māra through earthquakes and roaring. It seems that this is the main reason why the earth goddess appeared in the later Buddhist tests.
