Awaking to the fact that he could not follow the traditional way of Buddhism that had long existed in Japan (三學非器)，Honen (1133-1212) sought a Buddhism suitable for his era and innate capacities. Finding what he sought in Shan-tao's (613-681) Kuan ching shu 觀經疏 (Commentary on the Meditation Sutra)，Honen advocated his own type of Buddhism -- the Pure Land teachings.
Honen lived in 12 century Japan and Shan-tao lived in 7 century China. Overcoming such distances Honen succeeded in identifying himself religiously with Shan-tao. This was due to Honen encountering works of Shan-tao's such as his Kuan ching shu，and religious experiences such as meetings between the two patriarchs in dream meditations (二祖對面).
In this paper I have discussed the relationship between Honen's Senchakushu 選擇集 and the works of Shan-tao. |
