| 抄録 | 중국이나 한국, 일본의 일부 사찰에는 오백 명의 아라한을 모신 오백나한당이 조성되어 있다. 우리나라의 경우 은해사 말사인 거조암, 안변 釋王寺 오백나한전, 청도 운문사 영산전 등이 대표적인 오백나한전이다.
한국의 오백나한의 명호는 고려시대에 정해진 이후 오늘날까지 이어오고 있는데 그 중에는 우리나라 출신이 한 명도 없다. 반면 중국과 일본은 오백나한의 명호가 동일하며 또 시대와 지역에 따라 명호가 약간씩 달라져, 청의 강희제와 건륭제가 입전된 곳도 있다.
한편 중국과 일본의 오백나한 중에는 신라 출신의 고승 두 명이 포함되어있다. 2001년에 신라 왕자 출신의 정중무상대사가 제455번째 무상공존자임이 밝혀진 이후, 본고에서는 제479번째(간혹 480번째도 있음) 오진상존자도 역시 신라의 천축구법승인 悟眞임을 밝혀내었다.
또한 지금까지는 오진이 당에 간 시기가 781년으로 알려졌으나, 사실은 그보다 수십 년 전, 적어도 경덕왕 대(742~765) 무렵의 일이었음도 알게 되었다.
또한 소년승 오진은 혜초가 머물던 장안의 大興善寺에서 오랫동안 불학을 공부하였는데, 이로 보아 그가 혜초의 영향으로 천축구법행의 장도에 올랐을 가능성도 큰 것으로 보인다.
불교의 여러 신앙의 대상 가운데 나한의 證果는 불·보살에 비해 지위가 낮다. 그럼에도 불구하고 나한은 뛰어난 修行力으로 ‘일체의 욕망을 단절하고 번뇌를 해탈할 수 있는’, 즉 ‘有餘涅槃을 증득할 수 있는 존재’로 여겨져 승속의 존경을 받아 왔다. 그들은 살아 있는 동안에 生死煩惱를 끊은 존재이므로 “金身”으로 여겨져 신앙의 대상이 될 수 있었다.
밀교승 오진이 정중 무상의 경우와 마찬가지로 중국의 오백나한 중의 한 사람이 된 과정이나 이유는 앞으로의 연구대상이지만, 그는 당, 송, 명, 청대를 이어 중국인들의 존경을 받으며 지금도 중국의 수많은 사찰의 오백나한당에서 제 479번째 존자로서의 지위를 묵묵히 유지하고 있다.
Some temples in Korea, China and Japan, have the Hall of Arhat with 500 enshrined arhats (阿羅漢) and they are worshiped as the object of devotion by the clergy and the laity. There are good examples of the Hall of Arhat with 500 enshrined arhats in Korea, Geojoam(居祖庵) in YoungCheon City(永川市), Seokwangsa(釋王寺) in Anbyeon(安邊), Unmunsa (雲門寺) Yeongsanjeon(靈山殿) in Cheongdo County(淸道郡).
The number is always 500 but the members that are enshrined differ between Korea and China(including Japan). There are no Korean monk among 500 enshrined arhats in Korea and they were named during the Goryeo Dynasty continuing without change since then. On the other hand, the members are same in China and Japan and they were named after different times and areas. There are temples where Emperor Kangxi (康熙帝) or Emperor Qianlong (乾隆帝) of the Qing Dynasty was enshrined, and one where even the sage, Jesus was enshrined.
It is worth noting that there are two illustrious monk from Silla (ancient Korea) among the 500 arhats in China. Jeongjungmusang (淨衆無 相), a Sun (zen) master (禪師) from Silla was found to be in 2001 a venerable Musanggong (無相空尊者) of the 455th arhat. From my own research I demonstrate here that Ojin (悟眞) from Silla, a monk on a pilgrimage to India pursuing Buddha-Dharma, is also one of the 500 arhats, that of the venerable Ojinsang (悟眞常尊者) of the 479th arhat (or 480th one). It is thought up until now that he went to the China in A.D.
424 한국불교학 76 781 (Tang era), however it is clear from my research that he went earlier than that by scores of years ago at least in the time of King Gyeongdeok(742~765). When he was a young monk, he studied Buddhism in Daxingshan Temple (大興善寺) in Changan (長安, presently Xian) where Hyecho (慧超) stayed, who it is believed influenced his decision to undergo his pilgrimage to India.
How and why an Esoteric Buddhist monk, Ojin came under one of the 500 Arhats is the next subject of a research. He has maintained his status as the 479th venerable one in the Hall of Arhat of many temples being worshiped by Chinese through the Tang, Song, Ming and Quing Dynasties to the present day.
