| 摘要 | 무아와 윤회의 문제를 둘러싼 논쟁은 한국불교학계에서 학술적 담론의 분위기를 활성화하는 데 크게 기여했다. 필자는 그간 이 논쟁에 가담했던 연구자들의 열의와 진정성에 대해 높이 평가한다. 그러나 이제까지의 논의에 전제되어 있는 문제의식과 해결방안이 정당한가에 대해서는 의구심을 갖는다. 무아설은 윤회로부터 벗어난 해탈의 경지를 지향하는 반면에 윤회설은 괴로움의 유전 양상을 밝힌다. 두 교설은 각기 다른 경지를 나타내는 까닭에 서로는 대립한다거나 충돌한다고 보기 힘들다. 무아와 윤회가 다른 것은 해탈의 경지가 괴로움의 현실과 다른 차원인 것과 마찬가지이다. 따라서 무아와 윤회의 모순적 성격을 해소하고자 했던 그간의 시도는 타당하지 못하다. 필자는 초기불교 경전에 대한 분석을 통해 붓다의 가르침을 새롭게 규명함으로써 이제까지의 논의에서 노출된 교리적 오해와 문제점을 들추어낸다. 필자는 무아와 윤회의 문제에 관한 논의를 원점에서부터 다시 시작해야 한다고 제안한다.
The debates about the problem of selflessness (anattan) and rebirth (saṁsāra) have contributed to the promotion of academic discourse in Korean Buddhist academia. I appreciate the enthusiasm and sincerity of those researchers who have participated in these controversies. But I have doubts about the previous approaches to the solutions
which were premised on these debates. The teaching of selflessness aims at the state of liberation (vimutti). But the teaching of rebirth concentrates on revealing the progress of suffering (dukkha). Therefore, these two teachings represent completely different states. At this point, the attempts to resolve the contradiction between selflessness and
rebirth could not be possible and also could not be justified. I would like to clarify some of Buddha’s teachings which often lead to these kinds of misunderstanding, and review the issues falsely discussed during these debates. I have done this critical research based on strict analysis of the Early Buddhist Scriptures. I think that the discussion of the
issues about selflessness and rebirth has to be restarted from ground zero. |
