정토 또는 이상세계에 대한 갈망은 어느 시대에나 있어 왔으며, 시대적 상황에따라 조금씩 변해왔다. 다른 경전들과 달리 『유마경』에서는 사바세계와 대비되는정토가 아닌 사바세계에서 실현 가능한 사바정토를 주장한다. 『유마경』의 정토는유심정토, 수행정토, 사바정토로 이는 이후 한국의 사회참여 불교 운동들의 정토개념의 기본 방향을 제시한다. 민중불교는 사바정토를 지향하는 『유마경』의 태도를 계승하며, 당시 시대 상황에 응답하여 계급 불평등이 사라진 평등주의, 분단 상황을 극복한 통일된 국가 등을 정토의 모습으로 보고, 이를 이루기 위한 투쟁을 했다. 민주화 이후, 민중불교의계승자라 할 수 있는 참여불교는 평화로운 사회, 자연과 조화를 이루는 세상을 정토로 보고, 개인의 수행과 다양한 사회참여 활동을 하고 있다. 『유마경』, 민중불교, 참여불교의 사바정토를 검토해보았을 때 정토의 모습, 맑은 사회의 모습은 유심정토, 수행정토, 사바정토라는 공통의 틀을 가지고 있으나그 구체적 내용은 모두 다르다. 그렇기에 앞으로 신기술이 만들어낼 세상에서 지향해야 할 정토의 모습은 지금 당면한 문제들을 어떻게 바라보느냐에 달려있다. 그에 따라 실천 방식도 달라지고, 실현 가능성도 높아질 수 있기 때문이다.
The concept of the Pure Land, the Buddhist utopia, has been changed throughout various eras and locations. The term usually means a land purified by the power of Bodhisattvas or Buddhas and usually refers to the ideal world in next life. However, the Vimalakirti Sutra argues that Pure Land is here and now. This is because the Pure Land depends on a sentient being's mind. The Vimalakirti Sutra suggests three forms of Pure Land: the Pure Land by the mind; the Pure Land by practice; and the Pure Land here and now. These three forms offer the idea of Pure Land in Korean engaged Buddhism (Chamyeo Bulgyo). Minjung Buddhism(Minjung Bulgyo) inherits the Pure Land ideas and establishes the Pure Land as the equal society that would abolish classes and unify Korea. The forms of the Pure Land reflect the issues of Korean society at each time. Minjung Buddhists fought for their Pure Land and partially achieved it. Later, engaged Buddhism－the successor of Minjung Buddhism－changed the notion of the ideal world. After Korean society accomplished democratization, the Pure Land became a more popular form. This approach to the Pure Land stresses each individual’s peace and happiness as well as connections based on the philosophy of dependent-arising. In the case of Minjung Buddhism and engaged Buddhism, we can see variations in the Pure Land teachings of Vimalakirti Sutra throughout various eras and locations. This example suggests that we can set up a new form of Pure Land to solve contemporary issues in our time. What kind of Pure Land should we pursue to solve our major issues?
