History of the development of Zen Buddhism in rural Japan from 13th through 16th centuries; comprehensive analysis of social background of medieval religions, biographies of key figures (Dogen，Gikai，Keizan，etc.)，institutional history of major temples (Eiheiji，Sojiji，etc.)，formation of the Soto order，as well as the development of Koan study，new ritual practices, precept ordinations, and funerals that appealed to lay people; argues that rural Zen transformed from elite，monastic-centered religion for monks into a multifaceted religion that combined both elite and popular levels.
