This volume is the presentations of conference held in January 1993 at His Lai Temple. All invited speakers were most knowledgeable in the Asian languages. Special fields include history, literary,language and sutra translation in Buddhism.
The discussion was based on analysis of the available data concerning Prakrit, Sanskrit, Khotanese and the target language, Chinese, as it appears in early Buddhist texts and translations. Among the topics discussed were paleography, literary, sutra, incantation and phonology in early Buddhism happened in India, Central Asia and China. We can understand the complicated process of adaptation and digestion of early Chinese Buddhism in these aspects. It also showed us the relation between Chinese Buddhism and the western regions. This collection，as we expected，would benefit to those who are interested in Buddhism.
