Toutuoxing was one of the most common means of practicing Buddhism in the early Buddhism. Although Buddha combated stubbornly cultivating themselves hard according to a religious doctrine, Buddhism, as a belief system of "little desire and contentment", the final result of its development was the recommendation of ascetic practices. Although the teachings "Errusixing" of Damo possessed the limitless development, his teachings "Sixing" could be regarded as the reproduction of Toutuoxing in Central Plains. The value sense of Toutuoxing rested with promoting "little desire and contentment", it was a kind of stipulation to those who practiced Buddhism. Yet the Damo Chan sect, which faithfully pursued Toutuoxing, was rejected and struck by orthodox Buddhist monks all along. The organization pattern and living state, which Buddhist monks stored up the disciples and collected them together, traveled far and wide and begged for food, and moved about ,were also struck by the government all the way. The meaning of the thought and practice pattern of Damo Toutuoxing lied in that the way which monks lived in the mountains alone to cultivate themselves according to a religious doctrine posed problems and tasks for Daoxin and Hongren's establishing the fixed group of Buddhist monk, meanwhile also provided the lesson which could be drawn and the discouragement which could be avoided, especially found out historic necessity for the formulation of the rules of Buddhist temple, and still declared publicly it was the only way of living and developing for the group of Buddhist monk to adapt to the social reality to the utmost limits.
