The Sixth Panchen’s pilgrim to Beijing is an important event in Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. Many former scholars had done research on it, but few of them had dealt with the fact of the return of Panchen’s coffin to Tibet after his death in Beijing. This paper makes a study on the preparations and route of the return of Panchen’s coffin to Tibet and holds the idea that although the Emperor Qianlong continued his respect to the sixth Panchen in arranging this matter, he also considered some economic issues in terms of human resources and material resources. The aim of this paper is to provide multi-angles for the intensive study of Qianlong’s policy on Tibet and the relationship between Tibet and central government.
