圓測《解深密經疏》之性質與體例析論-以與傳統儒家經疏對照為中心=An Analysis of the Nature and Style of Yuan Ce's Commentary on samdhinirmocana sūtra : With a Focus on its Contrast to Traditional Confucian Commentaries of Classics
Saṃdhinirmocana sūtra is the fundamental classic of the vijnaptimatrata school. It serves as an important work of Mahayana Buddhism. In the first half of the fifth century, part of its content has been introduced to China. Silla monk Yuan Ce of the Tang Dynasty stated, "This brief work was written in Sanskrit only; however, four different versions were generated by different translators." Among these four translations circulated in China, the most complete version is done by Master Xuanzhuan of the Tang Dynasty. Although there used to be various commentaries and notes on the Saṃdhinirmocana sūtra, only the one written by Yuan Ce remains. Much scholarly discussions have been made about Yuan Ce's Commentary, its various versions, its inherent philosophy, or even the relationship among the three masters: Yuan Ce, Xuanzhuan and Kui Ji. However, this essay intends to explore the nature and style of Yuan Ce's Commentary on Saṃdhinirmocana sūtra based on the understanding of Confucian commentaries of classics. Hence, this essay is divided into the following five sections: I) introduction, II) review of the life of Yuan Ce, III) brief description of the nature and style of traditional Confucian commentaries of classics, IV) the nature and style of Yuan Ce's Commentary on Saṃdhinirmocana sūtra analyzed from the perspective of traditional Confucian commentaries of classics, V) Conclusion. The author hopes that the discussion done here would help readers to gain a different understanding of Yuan Ce's Commentaries.
