摘要
중국 8세기 당대(唐代)에 조사선이 발전하여 송대(宋代)에 간화선과 묵조선으로 전개되었다. 조사선 시대 선사들의 선기(禪機) 활용이 활발했는데, 선문답과 어록을 생성시켰다. 이 어록은 후대 문자선을 거쳐 공안으로 발전하였고, 공안을 수행으로 방법화한 것이 간화선이다. 본래성불(本來成佛)과 본각(本覺) 측면에서 조사선과 간화선의 수행체계는 같다. 조사선은 선사들의 행하는 자체가 불행(佛行)이고 불사(佛事)로서 좌선을 하고, 수행의 단계를 거쳐 부처가 되는 것이 아니라 본래 부처이므로 굳이 수행을 가자하지 않는다. 곧 돈오돈수(頓悟頓修)의 본래심에 입각한 본각문적(本覺門的) 수행체계이다. 반면 간화선은 이론적으로는 본각문에 입각해 있지만, 현실적으로는 번뇌가 있으므로, 번뇌를 제거하는 수행이 필요한 시각문적(始覺門的) 수행체계이다. 시각에서 본각으로 합치는데, 매개체 역할을 하는 것이 공안이다.
During the 8th century, in the period of Dang China, the Patriarchal Seon was developed and it led to the Ganhwa Seon and the Silent Seon in the period of Song China. In the aspects of the originally enlightened Buddha and the original enlightenment, the practicing systems of the patriarchal Seon and the Ganwha Seon are same. The patriarchal Seon argues that Seon masters’ practices are the Buddha’s practice as they are and that the Buddhist action is the seated meditation. That is the practicing system of the originally enlightened Buddha based on the original mind with the sudden enlightenment and sudden practice. On the other hand, the Ganhwa Seon theoretically was based on the door of the originally enlightened, but it acknowledges that we actually have Klesas. In order to eliminate those Klesas, it argues that we need to practice in the system of the inceptive awakening. When it comes to moving from the inceptive awakening to the originally enlightened, Gongan plays a role as the medium.
