摘要
This research studies thought on emptiness of Jingying Huiyuan 淨影慧遠 (523-592) by looking at his exegesis on the fourteen kinds of emptiness within the scheme of four kinds of emptiness in the section on “Meaning of the Four Kinds of Emptiness Divided into Two Approaches” (Sikongyi liangmen fenbie 四空義兩門分別) in the Essay on the System of Mahāyāna (Dasheng Yizhang 大乘義章). This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on life of Huiyuan highlighting his scholarly activities, as well as his works, doctrinal thought, and contributions to the development of important concepts for Buddhists in China. The second part analyzes Huiyuan's strategy of explaining Four Kinds of Emptiness, and discusses the Four Kinds of Emptiness at length. The third and final part of the thesis investigates Huiyuan's unique exegesis of categorizing Eighteen Kinds of Emptiness within the framework of Four Kinds of Emptiness.
