that Thus Come One called 'Limitless Light'?"
Shakyamuni Buddha has been telling his disciple why
Amita Buddha is called Amitayus "Limitless Life," and
now he asks about his other name saying: tat-kim
"what" manyase "do you think" sariputra "Shariputra,"
kena "for what" karanena "reason" (is) sa "that"
tathagato "Thus Come One" namocyate "(is) called"
(a)mitabho (Amitabha) "Limitless Light.
Consult previous Sanskrit lessons for a full
discussion of the vocabulary and grammar.
Note how the sounds combined in this: sa
tathagato'mitabho namocyate. sas became sa before
initial t-. tathagatas + amitabhas became
tathagato'mitabho (the combination of final -as and
initial a- resulting in nothing being left but -o;
and the final -as before initial n- also turning to
-o). Note that the Sanskrit for "Namo Amitabha
Buddha" with the sound changes and case ending for
the dative is: namo'mitabhabuddhaya. The question now
is why is that Buddha called Amitabha, "Limitless
Light"?
