Abstract敦煌學的發展,在佛教藝術研究方面,以「經變」最為稱著,而文學研究則以「變文」最受矚目。至於「變相」與「變文」相互關係的研究,也時有所見,儘管論點容有不盡相同,然大都從佛經轉變為圖畫、講唱文,或題材演繹等關係來立論。本人以為石窟寺院是佛教的實體,集建築、塑像與壁畫為一體。建築的形制,既有功能的考量,而寺院功能也受石窟形制而制約。因應寺院功能的需求,石窟壁畫的布局、內容的繪製與安排也就有所不同。本論文嘗試從莫高窟四十五窟的形制、壁畫內容,結合敦煌文獻來探測唐五代寺院講經的情況。特別是透過南壁「觀音經變」及其榜題,並結合敦煌發現的各種觀音經變掛畫、敦煌寫本《繪本觀音經》等相關文獻,透過功能分析與實際使用情形,探究唐五代敦煌寺院的活動與功能;蠡測寺院壁畫與俗講的關係。
