Abstract水陸法會全稱為「法界聖凡水陸普度大齋勝會」,是佛教寺院中舉行規模最大、最隆重的佛事活動,集中體現佛教普濟群靈、救度眾生的精神,水陸畫便是專供於水陸法會時懸掛的一套宗教畫,內容以佛、菩薩、羅漢、諸天為主,兼及世俗民眾等,是佛教世界觀中各種有情生命群像的體現,十分可觀。根據《水陸儀軌》儀文,十大明王是被啟請於上堂第八席,與穢跡金剛、諸天天王、護法諸天、天龍八部等同席,其目的除了為攝受剛強難調伏的眾生而以忿怒相的菩薩出現外,尚有護衛眾生、守護佛法,鎮衛清淨壇場不受侵犯之意。據此,水陸畫出現恐怖駭人的護法明王像,極具密教繁複神秘的藝術特徵。足見密教融入中土佛教,除了經典儀軌有例可尋外,藝術圖像中的水陸畫最能將此特色展露無遺,尤以明王最具代表。
本文便以寶寧寺水陸畫十大明王像為例,申述其藝術表現,並側看其信仰特色。
