In the article “On Freedom” from Collected Works of the Ice-Drinker’s Studio, Liang Rengong (Qichao) remarked that our minds were easily enslaved by four objects: ancient people, common customs, circumstances and carnal desire. When studying Krishnamurti’s doctrine (J. Krishnamurti, A1895-1986), I have discovered there are some similarities in both teachings. This paper is therefore intended to present the similarities and differences between Liang Qichao’s and Krishnamurti’s teachings through marshalling both arguments related to the four key objects as mentioned above. Liang Qichao, a scholar and thinker with broad and profound knowledge, was used to citing celebrities’ opinions or major issues to support his argument by using well-documented and extensive evidence; Krishnamurti, a practitioner with in-depth experience of life, taught people to be truly aware of their bondage in ordinary life. Comparing both great writings through inter-reading, together with consulting the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, we can find that they both actually complement each other and also show their discrimination between scholar and the practitioner.
