Abstract海雲,名印簡,乃元初與道教長春真人邱處機同一時代
,同樣重要的兩位人物之一. 本文主依「佛祖歷代通載」
,及王萬慶所撰之「海雲大禪師碑」,詳述海雲之思想及其
感化元初諸王的經過.

就其思想而言,海雲以「隨緣不變,不變隨緣」之真心
為基礎,主張「休生分別」,並依此開展出其無有出家,在
家之分,乃至儒,釋,道三教合一的思想.

在感化元初諸王 (特別是忽必烈) 的經過方面,海雲的
政治思想主來自瑜伽師地論的「王法正理論品」; 但在實
際事務方面,則從尊孔入手.

就禪宗而言,海雲代表了金,元間流行在華北的臨濟禪
法. 在整個佛法上,海雲是明代三教合一思想的先河. 而在
政治方面,海雲使元朝帝國步上「仁恕為心」的傳統的儒
家政治上去.

Master Hai Yun,also called Yin Chien(印簡 ),
was contemporary with the Taoist scholar-practioner
Chiu Ch'u-chih( 邱處機 ); both of them were
important figures of the time. This paper,based on
the General Record of the Past Buddhist Patriarchs (
佛祖歷代通載) and Wang Wan-ching's (王萬慶 )
inscription on the Tablet for Ch'an Master Hai Yun (
海雲大禪師碑),relates in detail the Master's
thinking and the story of his converting the
emperors of the early Yuan Dynasty.

Hai Yun based his religious thinking on the
concept of True Mind,which "accords with conditions
while remaining invariable,and remains invariable
while according with conditions." He emphasized
"non-discrimination" and claimed that there was no
difference between the ordained and the laity; he
even advocated the idea that Confucianism,Buddhism
and Taoism were one and the same.

Judging from the way he exerted his influence on
the Yuan emperors, he must have taken his secular
concepts from the `Yogacaryabhumisastra`,but
followed a Confucianistic approach in his handling
of political affairs.

So far as Ch'an Buddhism is concerned,Hai Yun
was an exponent of the Lin Chi Ch'an,which
prevailed in Northern China between the Kin and the
early Yuan Dynasties. In terms of Buddhism as a
whole,he was a predecessor of those scholars in the
Ming Dynasty who thought Confucianism,Buddhism and
Taoism were one. Politically speaking,he helped to
set the Yuan empire upon the traditional
Confucianistic path of benevolent rule.
