出禪宗精品.
貳. 構成中國禪宗的因素:禪宗能在中國園地生根的主
要因素有二:(一) 與儒,道二家思想互為輝映 (二) 與佛
家經典如金剛經,維摩經,法華經,涅槃經互為印證.
參. 中國禪宗的特質:闡述禪宗具七大特質:(一)
無的妙用 (二) 頓悟的心法 (三) 定慧不二 (四) 祖師的心
印 (五) 叢林制度之規建 (六) 公案的價值 (七) 棒喝的施
教方式.
肆. 結語:禪宗不是頭痛醫頭,腳痛醫腳的短暫鎮靜劑
,而是一種永恒純正的心淨心定之清涼劑,其理想境界是實
踐人間淨土,發揮「以大智故不住生死,以大悲故不住涅槃
」的大我,和諧,幸褔之淑世菩薩精神.

First,this paper in its preliminary remarks
states that only from the great melting pot of
Chinese culture could such an exquisite product as
Ch'an Buddhism be created. Then the paper relates
two factors leading to the rise of Ch'an on the
Chinese soil:1) the mutual influence between
Buddhism,Confucianism and Taoism; and 2) the fact
that Ch'an experience can be verified against the
tenets of such `sutras` as the Diamond `Sutra`,the
`Vimalakirti-nirdesa Sutra`, the Saddharma-
`pundarika Sutra` and the `Nirvana Sutra`,and vice
versa.

Seven major characteristics of Chinese Ch'an are
listed:1)the wonderful function of "Wu"(無 ); 2)
the method of sudden enlightenment; 3) oneness of
concentration and transcendent wisdom; 4) the
mind-to-mind transmission of Truth by the patriarchs
; 5) establishment of the monastic system; 6) the
value of Kung-ans; and 7) the use of beating and
shouting as a teaching method.

In conclusion the paper says that Ch'an is not a
tranquilizer which suppresses pain partially and
temporarily; it is something to purify the mind and
settle it in peace once for all. The ideal of a
Ch'an master is to realize a Pure Land in the human
world. With great wisdom he does not remain in
`samsara`; with great compassion he does not linger
in `Nirvana`. His is the spirit of a world-saving
bodhisattva, characterized by altruism,harmony and
happiness.
