Abstract道宣在《續高僧傳》論到中國中古習禪一門時,首先提
出的不是達摩,而是僧稠.

本文旨在從《續高僧傳》中整理道宣所知僧稠的禪法;

There are four manuscripts in the Pelliot's
collection of Tun-huang documents, which are related
to Seng ch'ou,a famous expert of meditation and
very influencial in China during the sixth century
A.D. This paper is an enquiry of Seng-ch'ou's method
of meditation which were not known for centuries.
Based on the information found from the Usu Kao-seng
chuan, the study finds that Seng-ch'ou's method of
Contemplation and Insight (chih-Kuan)included the
Five Stops and the Four Foundations of Mindfulness
(wu-t'ing ssu-nien) as well as the 16 superior and
victorious techniques. Comparing these findings with
the Tun-huang manuscripts the paper concludes that
these manuscripts are certainly not written by
Seng-ch'ou himself on the one hand; yet on the other
hand the authors of the manuscripts seem rather
familiar with Seng-ch'ou's method. The paper
suggests that at least one of the manuscripts was
probably written by some one who was related to
Seng-yung,a disciple of Seng-ch'ou. The paper also
analyzed the possible reasons responsible for the
decline of Seng-ch'ou's meditative methods. For the
first time, the four manuscripts related to
Seng-ch'ou are being published in the paper.
