AbstractIn China, after Emperor Shih-chung of the Ming Dynasty declared abolition on Buddhism,Buddhism started to remove itself from the patronage of the court, and moved on to a course of independent development. It was not until towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, with the appearance of eminent monks, that there was a revival of Buddhism. At that time, there was a trend towards the fusion of Confucianism and Buddhism. Certain eminent monks wrote and expounded on this fusion. One of the ways of propogating this amalgamation was to use Buddhist doctrines to explain Confucian texts or principles.

Ou-i was a noted Buddhist monk well-versed in both Buddhist and Confucian teachings. He used Neo-Confucian terminology and teachings in his works, but his ultimate aim remained the promulgation of Buddhism. His work of Chou-i-ch'an-chieh《周易禪解》is an exegesis of the Chinese I-ching《易經》 infused with Buddhist thoughts. This paper is primarily a study on this particular work of Ou-i.
