AbstractMany Middle Way Buddhist scholars and translators equate the pivotal principle of dependent arising with relativity from physics. I discuss the philosophic structure of Middle Way Buddhism and then nontechnically present relativity in modern physics. There are some significant parallels between these two very different disciplines. But because physical relativity formulates the laws of physics in a reference frame independent,or absolute, way and stresses other frame independent quantities, we may not equate physical relativity with dependent arising. Such an identification generates misunderstanding, since dependent arising leads to a fully nonaffirming negation.
