AbstractD. T. Suzuki and others have suggested that in an abstract way, koan and mondo express important principles of zen buddhism. the present article shows that these zen exercises have no cognitive meaning, and hence are incapable of expressing any principles whatsoever,so a fortiori they are incapable of expressing any principles of zen, abstract or otherwise. an alternative analysis of the function of koan and mondo is then proffered.
