Abstract敦煌彌勒信仰的歷史悠久,早在北涼的遺物中,就有彌勒菩薩像的發現。如今敦煌石窟尚保存自隋迄宋的彌勒經變九十八幅,為敦煌壁畫藝術的重要題材。茲檢視敦煌彌勒經變的發展,發現雖初唐僅有六鋪彌勒經變,不過它們或為置於主龕,或繪於兩側壁,幅面廣大,氣勢宏偉,且多以下生經變為主體,甚至還有四例將彌勒上生經變繪製於下生經變的上方,無論繪製的位置或是表現的內容,都與前代的作品大異其趣。本研究發現敦煌的初唐彌勒經變並不是從當地固有的彌勒圖像傳統發展而來,而是受到中原佛教圖像影響下的產物。其以下生經變為主體的表現,正與中原蓬勃發展的彌勒下生信仰相呼應,而上、下生經變共繪一鋪的手法,又是法相高僧兼重彌勒上生和下生信仰的寫照。此外,初唐的彌勒下生經變狀若西方淨土,特別強調彌勒淨土景觀的殊勝,且對應的位置也多畫西方淨土變,這樣的方式也反映了唐代彌勒和彌陀信仰間微妙的關係。
