Abstract | Recent studies of the self have important points of connection with theses and arguments of classical Asian philosophy. The claim that each of us is acquainted with a self that is independent of particular personality characteristics leads naturally to the conclusion that "atman" is Brahman. On the opposed side, there are links between the denial by Derek Parfit and others that the self is a primitive unity, and Buddhist accounts of the self as an aggregate of elements. |
