Abstract「自然」是漢語中固有的詞語,於先秦已凝合為複合詞,可做形容詞,副詞或名詞,在道家思想中更有豐富的哲學意涵. 自佛經的漢譯初期開始,許多不同的梵文佛教術語都譯為「自然」,造成解讀上的極大困難. 本文透過《正法華經》譯文與現存梵文的比對,發現作形容詞和副詞的「自然」,多數在梵本中找不到對應詞語,推測是譯者為滿足以四字為一音節停頓所做的添譯. 與梵本對照有助部分文句中「自然」詞性的正確判定,惟作形容詞和副詞的詞義一般並無解讀上的困難. 名詞方面的問題則甚為複雜,許多不同的梵文詞語如 "svabhaava" (自性),"prak.rti" (本性),"nirvaa.na" (涅槃),"svalak.sa.na" (自相),"asa^mbhuuta" (無生) 等,竺法護都譯為「自然」,僅透過漢譯本的文句必然無法對其意義做正確的解讀. 結合漢語,梵語,藏語的語文學和佛教文化的科際整合研究進路,勢可為初期漢譯佛典的語文研究帶來重大突破.
