The fame of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery(上天竺講寺) was correlated with a miraculous image of Kuan-yin(觀音) that was "spontaneously formed". From the Five dynasties to the Ming dynasty, the Upper T'ien-chu was the monastery of the Avalokitesvara(觀自在). The Kuan-yin of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery became known for her efficacy in averting natural disasters, saving people in every trouble and having not male or not female's force during the Ming dynasty. Because of Kuan-yin's force, the Avalokitesvara could help government to control the people. Therefore, the same classes of people were responsible for the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery becoming a center for Kuan-yin worship. A lot of persons contributed their properties and lands to the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery. So, this article is to research on the Avalokitesvara of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery during the Ming dynasty based on below questions:(1)the rise of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery from the Five dynasties to the Ming dynasty,(2)the development of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery during the Ming dynasty,(3)the main monks(leaders) of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery during the Ming dynasty,(4)the meaning of the Upper T'ien-chu's Kuan-yin during the Ming dynasty,(5)Kuan-yin and the activities of the Upper T'ien-chu Monastery during the Ming dynasty.
