The paper explores the grave implication of India Buddhist adoption of Sanskrit as the canonical language. While the use of Brahmanical Sanskrit as the canonical language. While the use of Brahmanical Sanskrit openly violates the Buddha’s language policy, it is a momentous yet conscious decision made by the Samgha. The Lengthy process which leads to the embracing of Sanskrit needs to be pondered upon. Starting with the relationship between the Buddhavacanna and the dissimilation of dhamma, this essay investigates the history which leads to the final resolution of using Sanskrit to propagate dharma. Using Jaina history of scriptural languages as a reference point, it tries to bring out the far-reaching influence of Sanskrit as the canonical language after the Mahayana Buddhism.
