This article aims to collate the main ideas of the “Eminent Monks’ Practices and Deeds” course taught by Master Sheng Yen at Dharma Drum Sangha University from 2001 to 2008. The author uses the year 2005 to divide the course into the early phase (2001-2005) and the later phase (2006-2008). In
the early phase (2001-2005) of sangha education, the Master frequently interacted with the student monks, taking roll call and requiring the students to make presentations on specific topics. The eminent monks introduced in the course are mainly those from the Southern and Northern dynasties up to recent times. In the later phase (2006-2008), the introduction of eminent monks focused on Master Xuanzang (602-664) and Master Taixu (1889-1947), as well as on Master Sheng Yen’s own practices and deeds (Due to space limitations, the author has omitted details here). This shows the transformation
and change in sangha education between the early and the later phases. Though he was in his later years and not in good health, the spirit in which Master Sheng Yen taught the course for student monks at Sangha University resembles that of Master Xuanzang, showing steadfast perseverance and
profound aspirations, manifesting a compassionate mind through his speech and actions, as well as his unwavering faith in the Buddhadharma. The key points of the course, as delivered by Master Sheng Yen, were the learning guidelines of those eminent monks, helping the students to grasp the
principles for learning, as well as the characteristics and compassionate vows as manifested in their practices and deeds, reminding the students of their personalities and styles in dealing with people and things. In a nutshell, there are two main features: practices and deeds, and compassionate vows.
