| 抄録 | The present article is mainly devoted to a discussion of the debate on Buddhism contained in the letters between Lu Chen and Hsiung Shih-li during 1943. The letters provide a means for investigating the history of thought. Although these letters were published in 1984，relatively few people have fully analyzed them up till now. The questions raised concerning Buddhism by these two people in their letters not only involve the development of thought from the new and old idealist studies of the Republican period (1911 -- present)，but also the recognition of Lu and Hsiung's differences on traditional Chinese Buddhist thought. As a result，the present article provides：(1) an interpretation of the research materials of the debate between these two figures. (2) the origin of the background for this disputation. (3) the main points of the questions in the dispute，and (4) the period significance of their argumentation. In the present study，the reader will be able to acquire a clear understanding of the clues behind the situation involving this debate between the new and old idealist thought and the development of Confucianism and Buddhism since the Republican period.
