| 抄録 | The sculpture of eastern India from the 6th to the 20th century is discussed. The historical Buddha lived and taught in eastern India, where Buddhism flourished as a leading faith for over 1,500 years. A number of finds from the centers of this faith provide evidence for the appearance of temples in antiquity. Sculptures also show that from at least the eighth century，the ideas of the Vajrayana system，a school of Buddhist thought that elaborated the ancient Indian idea that the universe and its structure are contained within the human body，were prevalent in eastern India. A good portion of the population of the area embraced Islam，but the majority followed ancient faiths, and the main deities were sculpted in the time-honored manner and worshipped in festivals with ancient roots. |
